Learning aims & outcomes
The
2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires were a significant natural disaster and the
personal recovery journey for community members is far from over. Since the
fires there has been the pandemic (which is ongoing) as well as floods, and
many community members are feeling tired, fatigued, and stressed. For some,
rebuilding has begun but is progressing slowly, for others this part of their
recovery journey is yet to begin.
While it has
been hard going for many in fire affected areas, it can also be challenging for
those that work directly with community members. It is well known and
understood that working with and supporting fire affected community members can
present challenges and difficulties not encountered previously.
This webinar
is for practitioners who are either currently working with (or are
likely to work with) fire affected community members. It will be facilitated by
David Younger, an expert in the area of disasters and emergencies, as well as
Clinical Psychologist. David has first-hand experience of bushfire recovery.
The 2009 Victorian Black Saturday fires came close to where he lived at the time
and he worked with trauma affected community members in his private practice
for many years afterwards. He is a consultant in the area of disaster recovery
and works throughout Australia.
The session will provide an opportunity for practitioners to learn about and
talk about bushfire recovery. David brings a commitment and a sensitivity to
the experiences and needs of those that join the sessions. Everyone is welcome,
privacy will be respected.
